Animal companionship is proven to be a powerful relationship that prevents depression and loneliness. However\, as people age\, caring for an animal can become more difficult physically and financially. These bags we call “breakfast bags of love” not only include food to start their day but also include food for their pet companion. When Senior Citizens are looked out for and receive proper nutrition\, they can care for their animal companions in the way they deserve.  Each of these bags (and donations for their pet companions) contained a morning meal that hopefully takes a little pressure off these Senior Citizens in need.  This community is often overlooked and often does not want to be a burden. It can be easy to think a Senior Citizen is doing fine when they are not. While a colorful snack bag can’t solve all the problems the elderly are facing\, it can put a smile on their face and assure that they are seen and that someone cares for them. SUMMARY:SHBHU "Serving Smiles" at Oak City Cares
DESCRIPTION:Join SHBHU on the fourth Sunday of every month serving meals with a smile to those experiencing homelessness in the Downtown Raleigh area. OCC is the result of many organizations working together in an effort to help close the hunger gap! SHBHU volunteers will bring food\, drinks\, take home snacks and paper products to help support those in need. We typically serve about 200 meals during this time. Volunteers arrive at OCC at 12:00pm to help set up the food line and we are usually finished cleaning up about 2:30pm. Volunteers will receive an email a couple days prior with specifics on what to bring with them. Any age can volunteer and serve with a smile! \n

DESCRIPTION:Triangle Families\, \nWe are very excited to announce the 8th annual SHBHU Small Hands Big Hearts Java Jive Jog 10k/5k on September 14th 2023!  For 8 years\, we have partnered with Java Jive Coffee and Tea to organize this FUN race. It is always a HUGE success and a VERY memorable race morning! Through the community and Sponsor support\, kindness and generosity\, the SHBHU mission to nurture children’s instinctive compassion continues to grow year after year. \nAs many of you know\, SHBHU provides accessible year-round volunteer opportunities (Compassion Missions) and also is a resource for our youth to use to propose\, lead and organize independent Compassion Projects for causes their hearts are personally drawn to. SHBHU is for the ENTIRE community and run by the community. All are welcome! Together\, we will nurture the next philanthropic and kind generation who will be leading the world. \nJust as in previous years\, in order to be accessible and include ALL people of ALL abilities\, there will be a 5k Run/Walk and also a 10k Run. We will also again have FREE REGISTRATION CODES for anyone with SPECIAL NEEDS (physical or financial)  who would like to participate in the race. DESCRIPTION:Flip Out for Skylar Compassion Mission!\nJOIN SKYLAR’S STRIDERS TEAM TODAY!\nWALK DAY May 18\, 2024\n\nWe have our annual volunteer service opportunity set for all SHBHU families and supporters to help out with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides Walk coming up on May 18th! The SHBHU Flip Out for Skylar compassion team has fundraised and supported the Skylar’s Striders team since 2013.  You can donate and or register to walk at this team’s link below.  \nThis year\, we are in need of VOLUNTEERS\, WALKERS\, FUNDRAISERS\, or all of the above now until walk day on May 18th! We appreciate your support through the years and many have expressed interest in other areas on how to help our SHBHU kids. \nAs many of you know\, Skylar Davis is one of our founding SHBHU members and was the original Ambassador Teen President. Skylar\, is now 22 years old\, has Cystic Fibrosis and has been speaking for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since she was 13. Skylar is part of the Central-Eastern Carolina’s Chapter in Raleigh and has nonsense/rare mutations that make her part of the 10% of people who do not benefit from modulator therapy. This inspiring human has also recently been chosen to be a 2024-2025 Area Ambassador for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation! Despite her disease\, Skylar is an accomplished dual-athlete for her university\, playing Lacrosse and a cheerleader at Pfeiffer University. She is graduating May 11th! DESCRIPTION:SHBHU “Breakfast Bags of Love” \n\nAmbassadors would like to know if y0u can help pack and decorate these breakfast bags for our Senior Citizens in need and their pet compasions in our community.\n\nDid you know that ¼ of Senior Citizens live alone with their pet as their only companion? Animal companionship is proven to be a powerful relationship that prevents depression and loneliness. However\, as people age\, caring for an animal can become more difficult physically and financially. These bags we call “breakfast bags of love” not only include food to start their day but also include food for their pet companion. When Senior Citizens are looked out for and receive proper nutrition\, they can care for their animal companions in the way they deserve.  Each of these bags (and donations for their pet companions) contained a morning meal that hopefully takes a little pressure off these Senior Citizens in need.  This community is often overlooked and often does not want to be a burden. It can be easy to think a Senior Citizen is doing fine when they are not. While a colorful snack bag can’t solve all the problems the elderly are facing\, it can put a smile on their face and assure that they are seen and that someone cares for them. SUMMARY:UPCOMING HOLIDAY COMPASSION MISSIONS! We are building "Bookshelves Full of Love" JOIN US!
DESCRIPTION:IMPACT PROPOSAL for “Bookshelves Full of Love” \nMission of Read and Feed – to strengthen literacy skills among under-served elementary school children and provide meals in a nurturing neighborhood \nHold Year Round SHBHU Book Drives  – This team will volunteer to collect books at all Compassion Meetings and any other event we organize as we do with food donations.  \nVolunteer- This team will volunteer for Read and Feed year round Book Drives to pass out books to children in need like we did at Wake Forest last year.  \nMobile Classrooms -This team will volunteer to clean up READ and FEED mobile classrooms. We were personally asked if we could help with this by Read and Feed \nWe would clean\, stock and prepare the READ and FEED mobile classrooms for programs by packing book bundles for students and also putting together book bundles to be sent out to youth in need in our community. \n\nStocks mobile classrooms using a checklist of kitchen and cleaning supplies\, take-home books\, student incentives and other materials\nOrganizes curriculum\, books\, etc. for that evening’s session\nCleans as needed\, including\, sweeping\, dusting\, mopping\, vacuuming\n\nBuilding ”Bookshelves Full of Love” – This team will also build bookshelves throughout the year at various times and holidays for various nonprofit friends including Read and Feed\, Gigi’s Playhouse\, Esther House and Habitat for Humanity. If you have any ideas of other places please suggest them.   \nOperational Cost: \n$28/shelf plus cost of paint – Donation contribution request would be $5 per participant which will cover most of the cost of each shelf for groups of 5. DESCRIPTION:SHBHU “Breakfast Bags of Love” \n\nAmbassadors would like to know if y0u can help pack and decorate these breakfast bags for our Senior Citizens in need who are connected to our friends at Meals on Wheels\n\nDid you know that ¼ of Senior Citizens live alone with their pet as their only companion? Animal companionship is proven to be a powerful relationship that prevents depression and loneliness. However\, as people age\, caring for an animal can become more difficult physically and financially. These bags we call “breakfast bags of love” not only include food to start their day but also include food for their four-legged companion. When Senior Citizens are looked out for and receive proper nutrition\, they can care for their animal companions in the way they deserve.  Each of these bags (and donations for their 4 legged companions) contained a morning meal that hopefully takes a little pressure off these Senior Citizens in need.  This community is often overlooked and often does not want to be a burden. It can be easy to think a Senior Citizen is doing fine when they are not. While a colorful snack bag can’t solve all the problems the elderly are facing\, it can put a smile on their face and assure that they are seen and that someone cares for them.
